2018 Projects – The Chickahominy River

In early February 2018 we did a survey of the Chickahominy River from Interstate 95 to Meadowbridge Road, about 20 miles of this 87 mile river. Our last survey was performed in 2015 and things are much worse today. The beavers are damming up the main river and flooding the wetlands. There were 27 trees fallen across the river preventing free access and 6 beaver dams.

These choke points are catching the trash where it sits until heavy rains wash it to the Atlantic Ocean. These dams also prevent fish from spawning up river and causing flooding as far as 15 miles up river.

There were at least 5,000 plastic bottles and 10-15 tons of trash in this survey ARR knowing that is takes 450 years for this trash to decompose it literally brought tears.

Please do not contact the governor of Virginia, he is doing a great job as is the DEQ and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

To ensure the river is maintained and the public can enjoy its natural beauty. This support cleanup operation for the Pamunkey River. A river survey is scheduled for the 1st week of March.

We are also going to try to get to the Appomattox this year.
